Recycling Program
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:35:30 PM »
I think, or thought I asked this before, but maybe not, does anyone have any information at all about the recycling program that the City of Lavon uses? Did anyone possibly receive any information when they moved in? I have a link somewhere on the board that just links them to the Collin County Recycling program, however I'd imagine that there are some specifics as to what can and can't be recycled with the program here in Lavon. I'd also like to find out if there are any specifics as to how the recycled material should be bagged, or do we simply throw everything in the green bin?

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I've always just thrown it all in the bin.  It's so simple that it's frustrating seeing all those empty curbs on Friday. I can't understand why more people don't take advantage of this program.

That was part of the reason I brought it up as I wanted to start recycling myself. However, years ago in another city, they were really picky about the recycling, all labels had to be removed from cans and bottles, plastic lids had to be removed and the bottles and cans were suppose to be rinsed out. And, only certain types of paper were excepted and the stuff had to be separated when you put it on the curb. Thus, recycling was actually a bit of work.

Please don't quote me on this but...

I believe that you are NOT required to separate any of your recyclables, but you need to put them in a bag or somehow prevent the items from blowing away.

You are allowed (i believe) to put any kind of glass, aluminum, plastic, or paper (not boxes) into the bins.  I do know that the City uses IESI (Greenville, TX) for trash removal services.  You may be able to find a web site or give them a call, if not you can certainly call Laura at City Hall (972-843-4220) to find out more details.

I am pretty sure that this is not the case here.

Again, please don't hold me to any of this, although I'm pretty certain, you should call IESI or City Hall to confirm.

Thanks for the info. I found additional information, below, on the City of Greenville web site, which as you mentioned, uses IESI. Thus I would assume the information would be applicable here as well.

====

The following types of items can be recycled:

Plastic – codes 1 & 2
Glass – amber, green, clear
Tin and Steel cans – rinsed and clean
Aluminum
Newspaper
Office paper
Junk mail
Cardboard - in small amounts

Excellent info Admin.  Thanks for that!  The IESI corporate site is very difficult to drill down and get what you're after.  Big fan of this forum!!

Well I guess that explains why they always leave the box that the bottled water comes in in the green bin.  Sheez, I figured since it was partially wrapped in plastic that I was killing two birds with one stone.  But yeah, they don't like cardboard.  Neighbor tried stacking boxes out there for them to take...they were there until Tuesday.

Not quite yet. I need to go to the container store and find something to put the recycled cans and bottles in. The problem is, I'll either need to find something that will seal, or make sure and rinse out all cans, especially soda cans. Were we keep the trash can constantly has ant issues that I fight every year. I think part of the problem is that the septic tank compressor is on the other side of the wall on the outside and I've heard ants are always attracted to electrical devices. Not sure if there is any truth to that or not. So, recycling is still on the agena, but hasn't happened yet :-(

We keep the recycle bin in the garage.  It has a small enough footprint so it's pretty unobtrusive.  We have tons of ants, but I can't remember ever seeing one in or on the bin.  If you have room in the garage, that might be a solution to your problem.
