How do you get weather alert sirens installed in a city?
« on: August 07, 2007, 02:51:38 PM »
Anyone have any knowledge of how to get tornado / weather sirens installed in a city?  I have looked on the web for collin county emergency services and can't figure out how to petition to get a system installed in the lavon / nevada area.  Anyone else have any desire to have that service available in our community?

That sounds like a good topic to bring up at a city council meeting :-)

In the mean time, I'd suggest a weather radio supplemented with text alerts to a cell phone.

I have been searching for grants to fund this type of equipment.  I have been really busy lately and have not been able to devote much time to it, but I hope to get back on track soon.
I too believe that this would be a BIG benefit to the area.

Assuming that your not affiliated with the city, if you do find any type of grants for this, definitely present your findings to the City Council. However, I do typically think it is the local city that sounds the sirens. Seeing that we don't have any staffing 24 hours a day yet, I'm not sure how that would work. I'm not sure if the Collin County Sherrif's departments would take on that responsibility.

I'm not with the City, but I am affiliated with the VFD that covers the area.
Sounding the sirens would be a logistics issue that would have to be worked out, but that would be a small issue
compared to finding the funding.
