Spread the word
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:04:39 AM »
Everyone, please spread the word and post links to this board! After doing some searching, I'm finding that a centralized method of communication for many of the smaller towns doesn't exist, and chatter is scattered on a wide variety of web sites. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it makes finding and communicating information about each community quite challenging. Wylie has their own forum with several thousand users. It isn't my goal to 'borrow' users from others sites, rather my goal is to link up people that live in smaller communities that don't have their own forums. With all the outlying communities, we could easily surpass the number of users on other sites and form an online community of our own.

Attracting people to one location is going to be mostly word of mouth. I'm working on making this site more 'searchable' via Google and the likes, and the recent face lift should make Google happy. However, re-indexing the site will take a bit of time. Likewise, I'm exploring a Facebook Connection option for all the Facebook users that will allow you to tie your Facebook account with this board. I'm not sure if that would interest anyone or not. The primary feature there is once your logged on to Facebook, your automatically logged on here (when visiting this site). Likewise, I've also implemented a way to share information to a Facebook page. Yes, Facebook is here to stay, everyone and every company has a Facebook page :-)

In addition, if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or comments about this web site or how to attract visitors, please by all means toss out some ideas! In the mean time, its up to everyone here to spread the word, post links to this site and suggest to your friends that they visit and share information pertaining to their community and have open dialog.

Thanks for reading this,

I think a $1,000 per referral sounds like a great idea!  :)   Trying to do my part, but as you mentioned since we are dealing with people (like me) who live in a smaller community without an organized website, a lot don't have internet in the first place.

For a $1000, I'd be out on foot recruiting!  I could offer one of those old AOL cds that I used to get on a weekly basis, man I don't know how many of those I threw away :-) Surprisingly enough, in my area, a majority of the houses actually have wireless Internet (dish on the roof), but maybe that just happens to be this neighborhood. There are still a few dialup users out there also. It is interesting though that having the Internet is becoming more mainstream, more of a requirement then it used to be, probabably in part due to kids needing Internet access for school anymore. Regarding the incentive or referral idea though, I'll have to think about that, maybe there is some little idea that I could come up with, besides money of course ;-)

I was kidding about the incentive.  I try and pass on the link to other blogs/forums that I visit when I can.  I remember those AOL CDs and then the 45 minutes to get connected and the five hours to five days to cancel the service.

Actually, I was thinking along the lines of some small 'perk' more then anything in relation to this web site, just for fun more then anything. I have to wonder how much money AOL spent sending out all the junk they did every week.
